How Do YOU Shower? I MUST KNOW.

First: my first essay on Romper went live – wanna check it out? Click here!

Second: Last night, CB and I were watching a movie when, halfway through, there was a shower scene. But not, like, a steamy shower scene that’s NSFW. It was just a woman showering and I was all like “Weird that she’s showering that way.” And CB was like “Um, what way?” and then my mind was blown when I found out that, not only do CB and I shower totally differently, but that maybe the way I shower is kind of weird.

Obviously I immediately paused the movie and was like “Follow me into the bathroom. We’re going to mock-shower.” And he was completely on board because he married me so he knows that this kind of conversation is a regular part of the deal.

I stepped in, turned my back to the shower, and mimicked all of my not-facing-the-water-ever actions. He then stepped into the shower and showed me how he lets the water not only HIT HIS FACE, but that sometimes he just stands there letting the water run over his head and down his body. Like he’s being slowly water-boarded in his own bathroom.

Me: “Oh my God, how do you breathe?”
CB: “Uh, the water doesn’t make me stop breathing.”
Me: “Right, but don’t you have to hold your breath?”
CB: “For what?”
Me: “Because water is hitting your face!”
CB, laughing: “No…it’s not that much water.I'm not submerged.”
Me: “Also, you’d never be able to have your eyes open when you showered!”
CB, still laughing: “Why couldn’t I open my eyes?”
Me: “Because the water is hitting your eyes sometimes!”
CB: “Right but if there’s not soap in there, you can just open your eyes.”
Me: “I cannot open my eyes around water.”
CB: “You are the strangest person I’ve ever met.”
Me: “YOU are the strangest person I’ve ever met! I’m going to have to literally poll everybody I know about this first thing in the morning!”
CB: “I’d expect nothing less.”

And so I started with my family.

I must point out here that my mom isn't gross.
She's just a bath kind of gal. Ok, proceed.
They knew what I meant.

And then my dad chimed in that he agreed that there's no right or wrong way and it depends on the circumstances. But let's get real: there's a right and wrong way and I'm doing it wrong.

Except I can't stop! It took me TWICE as long to shower this morning because I was trying it the facing-the-water way and I just kept coughing on water and felt like someone was squiring a hose at my face and wouldn't stop.

Anyway…I’m taking a poll – facing the shower or away? I MUST KNOW WHAT EVERYONE DOES. Go!

(Happy Monday!)

  1. Ok well I guess I'm doing it wrong too! The ONLY time I face the water is when I'm washing my face, and I DO hold my breath, yes CB, I know I'm NOT submerged, but I still hold my breath, you know, just in case. And holy wow! He opens his eyes??? He is a maniac. LOL. ---Amanda

    1. I'm not alone! Awesome. See, maybe this is why you gravitate towards the blog...it's where we find our people. :-)

  2. So count me in with the wrong crowd too and dang my momma warned me that hanging out with the wrong crowd would get me in trouble one day. I would never, ever open my eyes facing the water because that's just crazy!

    1. Right?? Facing the water and opening your eyes is what horror movies are made of.

  3. Soap up away from the water, rinse off toward the water. Doesn't the soap all run off if you use it facing the water? How do you get it off if you don't turn around toward the water? Aaaargh! Now I'm confused about showering, which was one place I thought I had my life in control.

    1. Right?? I thought the same thing! I think maybe the actual correct answer is "both." Like, I do face the shower at some point, but that's really only to splash water on my face when I'm washing it. But I think the question is more where do you spend your down time - facing towards or away?
See, this is why I'm here. To complicate things that don't need complicating.

  4. Do you shampoo in the shower? You have to face the shower head if you want to rinse the shampoo out. Or maybe you're a contortionist? Anyway, I'm a turnaround in the shower depending on what you are washing.

    1. What? Jane, I'm sorry, I know we've never met but that's just crazy talk. When you shampoo you MUST face away so it can run down your back! What is happening in the world?!

  5. I face away from the water! I always have...and now I am going to poll my husband and kids about this very important matter!

    1. I'm waiting to hear what your husband and kids do. This is fascinating.

  6. Definitely away from the water. Especially when rinsing shampoo/conditioner, otherwise it runs into your eyes!

  7. Count me in the facing away crowd. I always thought girls in movies showered that way just so we could sneak a peek at their boobies, but I'm sure that's not the reason for your family. Now I'm confused!

  8. Definitely face away. I hate water on my face (wash with a wash cloth and rinse with held breath and mild panic). I might face it if I'm standing far away or its a low shower head and just lean forward to wash the ends of my hair, but that's silly.

  9. Just took a shower post exercise and I tried to rinse my head from the back and I couldn't do it! How do you do your pits? Just curious.

  10. Um...shower facing towards the shower head & shampoo condition facing away. It's easier to get it out when I tip my head back and let it rinse down my back. Am I weird? I think I'm weird....

  11. Definitely face away from the water. I'm reading some of the other comments, and realize that I must be a contortionist or something to rinse off, but no freaking way am I going to face the water.

  12. Away from the water all the way. I didn't even realize that people were doing it the other way?! I can't stand the water in my face and eyes. I do turn around and get the front if I'm feeling cold, but that's only for a second or two, then I rotate again.

  13. Away. How the hell can you shave legs facing the running water?! You need to block the water flow with your back! I do stand far enough under the shower head that the water runs over my face while rinsing my hair and no, I do not hold my breath either. ;)

  14. Both! But opening your eyes when facing the water is just wrong. Unless you're making a hand visor to put over your eyebrows to keep the water off your face. When the world is acting all crazy, it's very nice to get in a warm shower facing the water and bending your head toward your chest so the water can beat on your skull and wash all the troubles down the drain. Umm, sometimes I face the shower and use the handheld on my back, too. Does anyone else do this?

  15. Okay, I just asked Boyfriend, and he also FACES THE WATER, which is weird because I have always faced away. Who doesn't face away?!?! (Apparently everyone?!!), but if you face towards the water, A, you're not doing a good job of washing your hair, and B, you're not going to be able to shave your legs or anything very well because all of the stuff will rinse off (I realize that this mainly applies to women, but still), and C, THAT IS SO MUCH WATER IN YOUR FACE! I'm with you on this one. The men in our lives are just insane.

  16. It may just be because I wear glasses and the force of the water knocks them off often enough when I don't face the water, but I've never not had my back to the shower head. I'm honestly a bit baffled people actually shower like that.
